What is the meaning of inpatient rehab? ›

Inpatient rehab is the therapy and doctor visits you get while in the hospital. Outpatient rehab is the care you receive when you're not in the hospital. This might include visiting a rehab doctor (a physiatrist). It can also involve getting physical, occupational, or speech therapy.

How long will Medicare cover rehab in a skilled nursing facility? Medicare covers inpatient rehab in a skilled nursing facility – also known as an SNF – for up to 100 days. Rehab in an SNF may be needed after an injury or procedure, like a hip or knee replacement.

A medical rehabilitation hospital, also known as an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF), is a type of specialty hospital that focuses on treating people recovering from debilitating injuries, illnesses, surgeries, and chronic medical conditions.

At an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, you'll receive at least three hours of therapy five days a week to help you regain your independence after a life changing injury or illness. When you arrive at our hospital, your team of therapists will work with you to create an individualized care plan.

One way physicians may provide inpatient rehab is through an IRF (inpatient rehabilitation facility). Separate from the hospital at which they would have been discharged, IRFs offer intense rehab programs and therapy for those who have experience a severe illness or debilitating injury.

You pay nothing for covered services the first 20 days that you're in a skilled nursing facility (SNF). You pay a daily coinsurance for days 21-100, and you pay all costs beyond 100 days. Visit Medicare.gov, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to get current amounts.

Original Medicare covers up to 90 days of inpatient hospital care each benefit period. You also have an additional 60 days of coverage, called lifetime reserve days. These 60 days can be used only once, and you will pay a coinsurance for each one ($816 per day in 2024).

IRFs are free standing rehabilitation hospitals and rehabilitation units in acute care hospitals. They provide an intensive rehabilitation program and patients who are admitted must be able to tolerate three hours of intense rehabilitation services per day.

The national average length of time spent at an acute inpatient rehab hospital is 16 days.
